New Destinations in Russia: Lufthansa flies to Rostov-on-Don and Ufa

Lufthansa is expanding its extensive network of flights to Russia. Starting May 1st, 2004, the airline will offer three flights each per week from Frankfurt to Rostov-on-Don and to the city of Ufa (subject to government approval). Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays a Canadair Jet will fly to Rostov-on-Don in the North Caucasus. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays an Airbus A319 will fly via Samara on the Volga to Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan. The current four weekly flights from Frankfurt to Samara will increase to seven.

The city of Rostov-on-Don, with over a million inhabitants, is the industrial, scientific and cultural centre of North Caucasus and is among the most important cities in the south of Russia. With its industrial production the Rostov region has developed into one of the strongest economic regions in Russia and is a partner region of North Rhine-Westphalia. With its inland ports, railway and motorway networks, it has a very well-developed infrastructure. The location of the city of Rostov directly on the Don and its history and tradition offer tourist attractions: Rostov-on-Don is considered the "Capital City of the Don Cossacks".

With mineral resources such as iron ore, copper, gold, zinc, lead, natural gas and petroleum, the Republic of Bashkortostan is among the richest regions of Russia. The economic focal points are petroleum production and processing. A close partnership has connected the republic with the free state of Saxony for years. The capital city of Ufa with more than a million inhabitants lies on the river Belaya close to the southern Ural Mountains. The natural beauty of Bashkortostan is known far beyond the country's borders. With mountain chains, vast steppes, rivers, lakes and diverse flora and fauna, the region has established itself as a popular tourist destination.

Due to the increased passenger traffic in the North-West region Lufthansa will also offer two new flights to St. Petersburg. From March 28 Lufthansa will start operating daily evening flights from St. Petersburg to its Munich hub and a new weekly route to Düsseldorf. Lufthansa will also expand its services in the Ukraine by offering second daily flights on the Kiev - Munich route. In total, with the start of the summer timetable, Lufthansa will operate 138 weekly flights between three destinations in Germany - Frankfurt, Munich and Düsseldorf - and 14 destinations in Russia and CIS.

THAI at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Developing Thailand as the aviation and air transport hub of Southeast Asia is among the priorities set by the Royal Thai Government. One of the ways this can be achieved is to develop Suvarnabhumi Airport to achieve the highest international standards, to ensure its support for the rapidly increasing air traffic demand corresponding to the need of aviation business worldwide.

His Majesty the King has graciously conferred the name of "Suvarnabhumi Airport" which means the "Golden Land" and is located in Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan province, covering an area of approximately 3,200 hectares.

THAI, as the flag carrier of the Kingdom of Thailand and the largest commercial airline operator in the country, will play a leading role in developing this new international airport to become the largest and most ultra-modern air transportation hub of the Asian region.

British Airways: Wireless internet access in executive lounges

British Airways is to launch wireless internet connections into 80 of its main customer lounges around the world.

The airline has agreed to work with British Telecom to install the new technology which will enable to customers to have broadband internet access without having to plug their computer into a modem.

The latest wireless technology will be placed by BT around the lounges which means customers can sit where they choose and still have access to the Internet or their company’s computer systems.

The first phase will involve fitting the new BT Openzone technology in all British Airways’ lounges at Heathrow and Gatwick by the end of April. It is anticipated that more than 80 of the airline’s main lounges will have the technology by the end of May 2004.

Paul Coby, chief information officer at British Airways, said: We are delighted to have signed an agreement with BT to have wireless LAN systems installed in more than 80 of our main lounges across the world in the next few months.

The wireless facilities will give instant internet and email connectivity to the hundreds of thousands of customers who use our lounges every year. We know many of them already want to make best use of their time whether it's on business or leisure either before or just after a flight.

Our lounges have always aimed to strike a balance between giving customers enough time, space and comfort to relax as well as making enough computer areas or connection points available to those who want to work by checking their emails or relax by surfing the web.

The beauty of having wireless technology is that the customer can start up a wireless enabled computer wherever they want to sit rather than having to use a dedicated area to have live Internet access. “

SN Brussels Airlines: New route to the Golden Horn
If you’re looking for a city of contrasts, make sure you put Istanbul on the list. First off, the city is actually located on two different continents - the only city in the world to pull off quite such a stunt, and an excellent metaphor for the country’s simultaneous link with East and West. Although it’s not the country’s capital, Istanbul is certainly Turkey’s most important city, and the vibrant hub of Turkish business, commerce and banking networks.

Plus, of course, several thousand years of history stretching over six successive empires. Stroll down a street in the old city (the European side, ironically) and you’ll walk past the great architectural masterpieces... Byzantine, Ottoman, Roman - this city has had one of the most civilising influences in the world. But contradiction is the city’s defining characteristic.

At dawn, while revellers wind their home from the nightclubs and bars, believers heed the call to prayer that rebounds from ancient minarets. Donkey carts vie with shiny Mercedes limousines in the noisy, narrow streets, and Oriental bazaars compete with Western boutiques for the custom of tourists and the city’s 12 million residents. To find your bearings, make your way to the Galata Bridge, which crosses the Golden Horn. To the north is the new town, modern Beyoglu, and Taksim Square. To the south lies the old walled city, with magnificent Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) and Topkapi Palace at its heart.

Commerce runs in the lifeblood of Istanbul... you can’t visit the city without being drawn into a complex process of dealing and bargaining, whether it’s a set of cups you’re buying or a flying carpet. Seriously though, although carpets are probably the most negotiated items in the city, the enormous market galleries - the Bazzar - that stretch whole blocks sell literally everything, and if a stall doesn’t have exactly what you want, there’s sure to be a guy in the back who can make one up for you double-quick. While you’re waiting you’ll drink chai, the essential lubricant to any transaction, and discuss the price in a calm and civilised manner. You must negotiate, by the way, a good negotiation raises everyone’s self esteem. You can spend a morning or an afternoon in the Bazzar, but ideally you should spend the day.

Special Introductory Offer
To celebrate the launch of the new route to Istanbul - starting 1st March - SN Brussels Airlines is offering an excellent new introductory rate of 229 Euro return including taxes. The offer lasts until 31st March. You can book with only 5 days advance booking anytime during the month.
