top-class wellness centers and superb cuisine. A sampling:
USA
At Manhattan’s Shoreham Hotel, guests will find all
the comforts of home, and more. Stereo systems and video
recorders are standard in the rooms, along with a small
selection of CDs and videos. Lighting plays an important
role in the decor, from candles in the rooms to the illuminated
walls in the bar, the ambience of which is constantly altered
with a regularly changing display of colored lights. On
display throughout the hotel are works of art from such
well-known artists as Winold Reiss, Robert Fabricant and
Karl Blossfeldt. The Shoreham Hotel is a member of the SRS-Worldhotels
Deluxe Collection.
Asia
A stay at the Angsana Resort & Spa (Deluxe Collection)
on the island of Ihuru in the Maldives is like visiting
paradise. Ihuru, with its clear blue waters and white sandy
beaches surrounded by palm trees, is one of the most photographed
islands in the Maldives. Here, guests are accommodated in
45 beach villas, each with its own garden, veranda and open
air shower. The Jacuzzi villas even have a whirlpool bath
on the terrace and a large Hollywood-style swing chair in
the garden. The interior of the hotel is furnished with
contemporary furniture designed in cheerful shades of lime
green, tangerine and yellow. The restaurant is directly
on the water’s edge and presents a picture postcard
setting at sundown.
The Dai-ichi Hotel (Deluxe Collection) in Japan’s vibrant
capital city was built in 1938. It is not only the flagship
of the Japanese Hotel Group Dai-ichi, but also a Tokyo landmark.
The interior furnishings are very European in style and
the classic furniture and marble floors make a fascinating
contrast to the high-tech city outside. Unusual too are
the twelve restaurants and bars, which offer international
cuisine alongside traditional Japanese and Chinese fare
and highly distinct interior designs.
Set on the idyllic beach of Krabi in Thailand is the Nakamanda
Resort & Spa, a new member of SRS-Worldhotels’
Deluxe Collection. Its turquoise waters, silky white beaches
and brilliant blue horizon are more impressive than any
picture postcard could depict. Consisting of 39 small villas
in the regional style, this luxurious boutique hotel is
a perfect synthesis of comfort and timeless elegance with
its simple, clear lines and colors. Its spa is an oasis
of rest and relaxation. Guests have unlimited access to
the mini-bar and butler service on a complimentary basis.
Europe
In Santpoort, near Amsterdam, the Duin & Kruidberg Country
Estate has joined SRS-Worldhotels’ Deluxe Collection.
The hotel resembles a fairytale castle, located beside a
lake in the impressive landscape of the Suid-Kennemerland
national park, also known as “The Garden of Amsterdam.”
This elegant manor house, built in the English style in
1909, once was the largest private home in the Netherlands.
After serving as a private conference center for a bank
for some years, the castle was officially opened as one
of the most unique luxury hotels in the Netherlands in 2002.
The hotel continues to host conferences for up to 400 guests,
offering a unique ambience and high technological standards.
The Duin & Kruidberg Country Estate also offers a large
fitness studio with the latest in equipment and a top restaurant,
De Vrienden van Jacob, which pampers the palate with French
cuisine.

Lufthansa FlyNet: a new era in global mobile communications
- Connexion by Boeing and Lufthansa offer broadband access
for high-flying surfers
On Monday, May 17, flight LH 452 from Munich to Los Angeles
will usher in a new era in mobile communications. In a world
premiere, Lufthansa passengers aboard the Airbus A340-300
D-AIGB "Recklinghausen" will be able to experience
high-speed broadband Internet connectivity on a routine flight
at cruising altitude. The aircraft is equipped with the Lufthansa
FlyNet system, which in conjunction with services provided
by Connexion by Boeing permits unrestricted in-flight Internet
access with a laptop or other mobile terminals via wireless
LAN (WLAN). Using the satellite connection provided by Connexion
by Boeing, Lufthansa passengers can surf the Web, send e-mails
with attachments or set up a secure data connection via a
Virtual Private Network (VPN) to their company’s Intranet
or mail server.
Connexion by Boeing offers FlyNet users thirty minutes'
Internet access for US $ 9.95, and an additional 25 cents
per minute thereafter. The flat rate for an entire flight
is US $ 29.95. Passengers will also gain access to the free
FlyNet onboard internet portal, which contains over a thousand
pages of constantly updated news, weather, travel and lifestyle
information. The portal will also offer shopping possibilities,
Lufthansa and Miles & More information.
FlyNet has already been installed on five A340-300s. After
the start of the service on the route Munich – Los
Angeles further destinations, for example in Asia, will
follow. By the spring of 2006 Lufthansa’s entire long-haul
fleet of 80 Airbus A340, A330 and Boeing 747-400 aircraft
will be equipped with the technology. Lufthansa Technik
received the necessary civil aviation authority approval
for all the system components, and also became the first
aviation company worldwide to gain operational certification
for a WLAN connection on an aircraft. Lufthansa Systems
is responsible for developing the software for synchronizing
the portal server onboard with the ground system.
Traffic to and from the aircraft is handled via geostationary
communications satellites orbiting the earth at an altitude
of 36,000 kilometres. The downstream channel will run at
a speed of 5 megabits per second (Mbps), while upstream
traffic will run at 1 Mbps, which is faster per user than
ISDN. Last year a forerunner of the system passed a three-month
test run on the Washington - Frankfurt route with flying
colors.
